Red Eye - Starring Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy

From the master of horror that is Wes Craven, comes Red Eye. Not so much of a horror as a tense ‘edge of your seat’ thriller, Red Eye is a slight change of direction from the style we usually see from Wes Craven but still manages to pack a few punches in the form of gripping scenes and tense plotlines.

This fast paced movie begins with one of the main characters; Lisa Reisert waiting to board her plane to travel home to spend time with her slightly over protective father. She meets a handsome stranger ‘Jackson’ (Cillian Murphy) who invites her to have a drink at the bar with him whilst they wait for the delayed Red Eye flight. When they do finally manage to catch their flight, seemingly by coincidence, they find out they have been seated next to each other on the plane. From there, things take a turn for the worst, when she realises the true nature of Jackson’s interest in her.

Lisa is then forced to make the decision between saving her fathers life, or helping the hit man to kill his assigned target and his family.

Wes Craven has used his winning formula from ‘Scream’ and created another strong female lead in Lisa, who is played brilliantly by Rachel McAdams; it is nice to see a female character with such determination and strength that just refuses to give up at the first hurdle.

Cillian Murphy plays the role of the menacing hit man very convincingly; with fantastic chemistry between him and Rachel McAdams you cannot deny that the quality of acting is top notch.

However, there are a few drawbacks with this film, one of them being that it is just too short!! With its running time of just 73 minutes the film left me feeling a bit let down at the end, and it almost seemed rushed. There was a feeling of “Is that it??” when the credits started to roll, and you feel that maybe it could have been dragged out just a little bit longer, with an extra plot twist or two at the end to keep the viewer guessing for a while.

There are also a few scenes that are a little far fetched, but luckily Wes Craven manages to pull these off remarkably well by keeping up the fast pace of the plot throughout the entire film.

If you are a fan of Wes Craven’s work, you will notice some of his trademark movie moments, like the strong willed girl, the overbearing father figure and even the final scenes bearing resemblance to classic moments from Scream.

While it is not quite on the same level as some of his earlier films, it still manages to provide great entertainment. Over all, Red Eye is an edge of your seat thriller that is definitely well worth a look.

I would give this 3 out of 5 stars. View the Trailer here>>
